Freedom Reformation Movement
The Freedom Reformation Movement aims to represent the vast and varied peoples of Canada, standing up for those principles which are fundamental to the social and economic prosperity of our nation. We will do so not through partisanship, but by uniting disparate groups around the principles outlined below; we will pressure politicians, educate and inform the populace, and organize protests and demonstrations where necessary to ensure that individual freedoms are protected.
Principles of the Movement
Small Government:
“The Best Government is that which Governs Least” – John L. O’Sullivan
Numerous academics from Philip Grossman, to Edgard Peden and Michael Bradley, and even our own Herbert Grubel and Johnny C.P. Chao at the Frasier Institute have done studies to indicate that a country’s economy grows as the overall size of government decreases, a fact that common sense has known for decades. The ideal percent of GDP that government should consume is, according to most studies, between 25-35%. With this in mind it is the goal of the Freedom Reformation Movement to reduce all government spending to 30% of the GDP on a province-by-province basis.
Personal Liberty and Freedom:
“When your response to everything that is wrong with the world is to say, ‘there ought to be a law,’ you are saying that you hold freedom very cheap.” — Dr. Thomas Sowell
As we push forward with a reduction in overall government size so too shall we look to reduce the burden placed on government and ourselves by over legislation. Increasingly over the years our society has adopted a lowest common denominator mentality to legislation, attempting to ‘protect’ the people from themselves. It is the stance of the Freedom Reformation Party that a person has the right to make their own mistakes and bear the burden of those errors, and more over that by allowing them to do so we will become a stronger willed people, a people with a renewed perspective on personal responsibility.
Power to the Provinces and Territories:
“To achieve world government, it is necessary to remove from the minds of men, their individualism, loyalty to family traditions, national patriotism and religious dogmas.” – Dr. G. Brock Chisolm
As proponents of personal liberty and freedom it is necessary that the unique qualities of each province and territory be considered and respected. No federal body can understand the needs of a province as well as the province or territory itself and as a result it is imperative that while reducing overall government intervention that we empower the provinces and territories to govern themselves. It is the movement’s stance that each province has a unique culture with unique needs and that the best caretakers of the provinces are the elected representatives from those provinces, not those who reside in Ottawa.
Separation of Church and State
“I am for freedom of religion and against all manoeuvres to bring about a legal ascendancy of one sect over another” – Thomas Jefferson
Religion has long and often been a topic of argument for many politicians and political movements. It is our stance that religion and spirituality is a personal matter and not a matter meant to be debated by the state. With that being said it is imperative that we acknowledge the separation of church and state, and by extension Freedom of Religion does not constitute an excuse for the unlawful abuse, assault or execution of individuals, or justification for crimes of any nature, as agreed upon by our society. The Freedom Reformation movement will work to ensure that no religion or belief is unfairly persecuted for simply existing but will hold all persons accountable to the same laws, as agreed on by the courts, regardless of that person’s beliefs.
Representative Government
“The tyranny of a prince is not so dangerous to the public welfare as the apathy of a citizen in a democracy.” – Montesquieu, 1748
An important and necessary principle for a democratic society is to have a representative government. This requires that people speak to their representatives and that they are involved in matters of public life. Like all freedoms and liberties, citizens must take responsibility for defending and using their Freedom of Speech. This is not solely about activism however, additionally and necessarily we require that our government be elected by the people, from City councillor, to Mayor, to MPP, to Prime Minister; all must represent and be elected by the people.
Accountability and Transparency
“Anything we do should be in the spirit of transparency and open government.” -Councilman Van Pearlberg
With the notable exception of matters of national security, it is imperative to any functioning democracy that the actions of its government be open and accountable. All activities, be they economic expenditures by ministers or discussions on proposed bills should be subject to public scrutiny. It is the position of the Freedom Reformation Movement that transparency and accountability should be increased at all levels of government so long as doing so would not jeopardize the national security of our society.
Defense of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms
“Do not allow to slip away from you freedoms the people who came before you won with such hard knocks.” – David Herbert Lawrence
At every step we, as responsible citizens, must fight to maintain our fundamental Rights and Freedoms and indeed work toward improving them. Hundreds of Thousands of men and women have died fighting for our way of life, be they Canadian, American, British or soldiers from any other free society. It is imperative that we do not let their sacrifices be for nought. Above all else, fundamental rights and freedoms must be protected, and we must oppose any regime, body politic, or organization that would deny people these rights.
Equality amongst Canadians
“Equal rights for all, special privileges for none” – Thomas Jefferson
Our people will never, truly, be equal until the same opportunities are made available to all, regardless of race, gender or belief. This requires, however, that we do not favour any given community to compensate for some perceived pass transgression or inequality. We must hold not only our government to this, by demanding a cessation on racial programs, but also businesses and individuals. It is not the governments place to regulate the private business owner but ours, as citizens, to ensure that businesses and people that do not promote the ideals of our society are made to see that we will not tolerate them. The Freedom Reformation Movement aims to inform the populace about violators of our societal ideals so that you can voice your dissatisfaction to the parties responsible. Do not depend on the government to do what you are capable of. Government is not strong for the citizen – its is strong because of the citizen.
